10 TIPS TO HELP YOU DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS AGES 0-5

How to Decorate when you have little kids

Hey, got little kids at home? I bet you find it very hard to decorate! How much does it mean to you, know ing that you’re not alone? Every mom in the world that does not have a robot for a kid feels the way you do right now.

I mean, you love your kids but the truth is that it’s very difficult to leave them for 2 minutes around the house alone. They will get busy!

I often find it amazing the speed with which they change things. Move them for you, rearrange, store away forever (my Explorer control is missing and the 1yr old took it!) , change the use of some, truncate the destiny of others i.e totally end it.

Well It’s all about TLC in here and today is your lucky day! If you understand what it means to have space goals, this means a lot to you. So I have put together some tricks that will help you keep things in order and lessen your overwhelm.

To get started though; pause, stop blaming the cuties, breathe in and out…then read!

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #1; DECORATE WITH IMMOVABLE ITEMS

Some accessories are so heavy that it would take multiple adults to even attempt to lift them. You could try to infuse pieces like this in your décor and just sit and sip tea while watching your toddler give up after the usual banter.  Then wait for them to come to you for that comforting hug. Life could be as simple as that.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #2; DECORATE WITH NONBREAKABLE ITEMS

Accessories that come in glass or ceramics have cousins that come in wood and even thermoset plastics if you’re worried about it looking too cheap. Some of these items include Very large vases, potpourri bowls and centre dishes, figurines, decorative balls  and many more.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #3; KEEP THINGS OUT OF THEIR REACH

If you pay more attention to your wall space as opposed to just your floor space, you will be unlocking so many décor possibilities. Think of ways by which you could decorate your home and protect your kids in the process because some of these items are in fact hazardous to the kids. You don’t want them chewing on freshly scented pot pourri leaves or attempting to light up candles or meddling with your diffuser sticks.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #4; CHILD PROOF

You could go for silk or satin paint finishes as opposed to emulsion so that you can easily wipe off their cute hand prints.  If you cannot change your sofas, protect them with washable covers.  If your home is not large enough to separate your functions from theirs you have to think outside the box.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #5; CHOOSE YOUR FINISHING WISELY

When my husband and I got married, our first set of sofas was done in cream leather. When our first child came, she made it her personal white board and expressed her fascination for art on the rear of the sofas. If you’re my very cose friend and you’re reading this, you know what I’m talking about. That simple experience informed the decision we made with the next set as we got ‘Navy blue Fabric’ sofas.(I’m actually still trying to decide if it’s Navy blue or black) One day she went with her pen and saw that things were not working as she planned then came to me to lament about her experience. I felt all sorts of smart as I sympathized with her.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #6; RESTRICT THEIR MOVEMENT

It’s not very easy to watch when your kids destroy things that you have spent a lot of money putting together. They could be things that have been passed down from generations or items that are personal to you that you have out on display to help create a very uniquely inspiring space. You may have to result to restricting their movement. This is the hard truth and you don’t have to feel bad when you are doing it. You could keep them out of certain spaces to prevent damage.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #7; THINK CHILD FRIENDLY

Soft furnishing is one way of introducing child friendly décor. Not that you want them to think of them as soft toys but in terms of damage how much harm can soft furnishing cause the kids? How much harm can they cause soft furnishing? They are smart too you know and they’re not always out to destroy. Imagine your kids placing their chubby cheeks against fluffy furs or cuddling under wooly cashmere throws while watching a movie with the family? Cute init! This is a nice way to go if you wouldn’t want them to restrict them all the time.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #8; CREATE THEIR OWN SPACE

Come to think about it, they are kids and they also need to be free to play as part of development. Letting them play does not mean  you should lay your assets down for them to trample under feet. You have invested a lot of money and time into your home. It is wise to create a play space for the kids where they can express themselves without  guilt or fear or sin. Do it nicely, fill it with the exact things they are interested in. This is the only way to ensure that they make use of it. Kids love the next best thing. They will leave you and your treasures alone. This is better and more loving than just restricting their movement. Give them an alternative. It shows you care. It could just be a corner.

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #9; LET THEM PLAY OUTDOORS

As part of a well rounded development, it is important for kids to play outdoors. For them to be able inhale and exhale clean fresh air, be blown by the breeze and kissed by the sun every once in a while. I’m learning to do this now. I’m blessed with a size-able exterior space so I figured I should make use of it. I sit with them and read a book. This is how I while away time sometimes, it’s good for me and it’s good for them.  Take them to a park within your estate or area . They can ride their bikes and engage more with nature and trust me, you will have fun watching them.

You did play outdoors didn’t you? Life is not always about cartoons and smart gadgets. Schedule it and make it happen. You’d be amazed how excited they will be. And don’t you just love to see the smiles on their faces!

HOW TO DECORATE WHEN YOU HAVE KIDS ages 0-5 TIP #10; SENSITIZE THEM

I saved my best tip for last. This is by far the greatest and most important one to me. My 4 year old knows all about gently scrubbing the doors or wall with soft soap and a sponge. I sell decor items and she does not touch them. I have quite a number of decor on display as well. I started early to instill the value of those things to me, in her. Her little brother turned a year old last month and clearly he has not been inducted into the hall of fame yet.

He waddles his way around the sofas to one of the consoles, picks up a frame that I did not ask for, walks over to me and with the most adorable smile in the world and hands it over. I’m smitten by his cuteness and so I receive it and say thank you with all my love…as I patiently await the time when his education begins. The next few months will be great for prepping. It is extremely important to begin to sensitize them early. Read all about it. This is my best armour yet! I promise you that you can never go wrong. Just do it.

  1. Nice write up. I recently changed my sofas from leather to leather/fabric. I’m not sure I did the right thing now cos my kids jump all over them with their footwears on. Trust me I’ve tried to correct this a number of times. The fabric gets stained here and there with time…I guess that’s the challenge of using a fabric sofa. Not so easy washing em too cos of the thickness. I might just go back to leather in the nearest future…thanks for the tips.

    1. Personally I love fabrics because of the softer, warmer feel but I’m eclectic in a way so eventually I’ll have both leather and fabric sofas in a mix!

The care, Wear and tear really depends on the type and grade of fabric, the colour, the wefts and warps. Some fabrics come in stain-resistant finish so even when they are in light colours, they don’t get stained much and they’re easy to clean. I could have gotten around my major challenge with my leather sofa with one of the other tips above but I had always wanted fabric sofas so for me that was one more reason to get it. There a number of things really that must be considered that even go beyond the reason I highlighted for picking my own finish. Hopefully I get to do a proper post on that but for now I’ll say Comfort, Budget, Care, Lifestyle, even Health are a few things to consider when trying to make a choice between leather and fabric sofas.

Thank you so much Abiola, you brought another dimension to our discussion!

  3. Found you on Facebook through Victor Bassey and i’m trying to contain my excitement! I actually found your blog while requesting to join your Facebook group and when i saw this topic i opted to read it first. Tip #1 is new to me, any suggestions on these immovable items? I’ve got a set of twins and a son all under 5

Can i please share some of your posts with my community on Facebook?
    Thank you.

    1. I’m so excited to read from you Olabisi!

An example of an immovable item would be large heavy vases and sculptures. Furniture can also be used to decorate when they are thrown in as accents. Thought it’s not every weighty decor that’s large, some door stopper and book ends are heavy but they are small size-wise.

I would advice that if you’re going to add a heavy one it should be one that’s added to accentuate, it could pop with colour or be your preferred metallic tone. Pieces like these are conversation starters on their own, very catchy and different.

By all means please go ahead and share, share, share! Thanks so much for the love!

  4. Thank God for silk paint!! Otherwise, my walls would probably look like an abstract painting.

Nice feature. Will try to work at consciously creating their own space.

    1. Yay Anjay! loool @abstract painting. So far, Miss 4 and Master 1 have been good to me but silk paint is on the list for my next home project. It just saves one all the trouble, my eyes won’t have to roam so much and my voice will be heard less.lol. There’s so much peace that comes along with silk paint. So much peace.

@Working on their own space, they’d love it! You can start gathering ideas while planning towards it.xo
