A Dining table is more than just furniture. It’s a welcome addition in any home where great food and connection with family is important. It fosters closeness and great conversations because of the sitting arrangement. A dining table can turn a space into a meeting place for business or a place for entertainment and games. Some people boycott its use but eating on a dining has health benefits too. So it’s a good piece to incorporate in you have the space for it.
The most common spaces where you’ll find a dining table are; in a separate dining room, in a shared space with the living room or in the kitchen. Great yards and wide enough balconies and terraces make for great choices too. Personally, I wait for a time when I’ll be able to set a dining table in my yard even if I have another one indoors. I can actually see me right now, great healthy food spread all over, fresh air and sunshine (well, I’ll be under a shade and I’ll have suncreen ), soft smiles, no worries, having great conversations with family and friends on my outdoor dining table! *sigh* That time is coming 😀
What you like and what you want matters a lot when choosing a dining table. However, there are some more important things to consider and I’ll share with you.
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A DINING TABLE #1; STYLE
Except you’re going for a mix and match of styles, your dining table is best mirroring the style of the space you’re putting it in. The kind of finish you choose depends on the style you’re going for. Do you want Contemporary with straight lines, glass and airy colours or Traditional with some sort of grandeur? The mood you’re setting in the space matters too. For a dramatic feel, go for rich dark wood, deep coloured fabrics and/ or leather. Use low backs and unconventional type seating like benches for a more relaxed look. High back chairs work well for formal looks and for traditional looks, carvings and curves reminiscent of the classical era will nail it for it for you.
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A DINING TABLE #2; SIZE
How many people are you expecting to use the dining table at a time? Do you entertain a lot? Are you married and with kids or single? What will change about your number in the next 5 years? How often will you use your dining? If its going to be once in a while, there’s no use celebrating it especially if you’re short on space. If you’re neither here nor there you could do an extendable dining design that makes your table flexible for now and able to adapt whenever your numbers change. Think about movement when considering the size of your dining table in relation to the overall floor space you have
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A DINING TABLE #3; SPACE
The floor space you have for your dining table largely affects its size. Straight edges will work well when you’re tight on space and the curves work well when you’ve got luxury of space. Those with curves can usually sit more people and may not place you in a box like the ones with the edges edges. So there are pros and cons. There are those that mix both curves and edges and there are free form dining tables. Whichever shape of fining table you go for make sure its length and breadth sit perfectly within the space you have.
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A DINING TABLE #4; BUDGET
You may find a dining table that suits your home really well in store if not, a bespoke one that’s made to fit and suit your conditions and tastes can be made for you. Whichever dining able you go for make sure it falls within your budget and satisfies your needs or wants or ultimately both your needs and wants.
5 THINGS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING A DINING TABLE #5; TRANSPORTATION AND ASSEMBLY
Delivery and set up seems unimportant but it is. It actually informs buying decisions a great deal. Ask the store owners if there’s a disassembly and reassembly option if it’s a very large piece. Even small pieces with irregular shapes find it hard to make it through conventional door ways and oh…spiral staircases! So before you get all excited, consider how it’ll be moved from store to your home and then actually gotten into the space, except you have a crane to do the lift! The whole essence of disassembly is for ease of movement but I get it if you tend to battle with furniture with screws and how stable they’ll be judging by the ones you may have seen. That has a lot to do with quality so be sure to think it through in all directions.
