Having clutter in your space is definitely not a good thing. Some people argue that a clear space looks empty to them. Fair enough, because I feel the same way too. I love little knick knacks here and there, the character that comes with my own tastes and style. I don’t really like very clear spaces to be honest. And the concept of less is more only appeals to me in my kitchen. And well my home office corner too!
You see, in my kitchen, I want clear work tops, as many things as possible locked away in the cupboard and drawers especially since I’ve had my children. Everyday is someone’s birthday in school and they’re constantly coming home with this sippy cup today and a pretty food pack tomorrow. My daughter could use about 10 different cups a day so I just lock them all away and bring them out only when one has reached the peak of its life time here on earth.
I feel blessed to be living in my new accommodation for the very reason that the kitchen is so much larger than the other 2-3 I’ve had since I got married. Right now, I really get to feel like the iron chef that I am. I can spread out my ingredients like on food Tv and feel the need to clear up when I’m done because there’s a place for everything.
Anyway back to the subject matter of clutter. If you have a cluttered home, I have taken the liberty and time to reflect and analyse the issue of clutter for you. I came up with some conclusions and I thought to share.
5 TRUTHS ABOUT CLUTTER YOU SHOULD KNOW #1; THERE’S MORE TO CLUTTER THAN MEETS THE EYE
The effects of clutter are much more than the physical space that it takes up in your house. The things having a cluttered environment does to you that you can see are just a tip of the ice berg. There are so many other ways it affects you that you don’t realize because you blame other things or other people for it. The emotional and mental effects of clutter, I say this all the time, is way greater than the physical effects.
By emotional, I mean the feelings, By mental , I refer to the thoughts. Do you know that some people feel claustrophobic when they step into chocked up or unorganized spaces? Do you know some people are just automatically sad? In some homes, clutter is costing them peace and happiness. Husband, wife and children are apart. And then some children are picking up bad signals because they live in such environments but people keep wondering why they are so untidy.
5 TRUTHS ABOUT CLUTTER YOU SHOULD KNOW #2; NOBODY WANTS CLUTTER
So this statement seems so untrue but it is true. Even people who have so much clutter all around them do not want it. I know a few people like this. If your home or office is cluttered and you’re reading this, chances are that you agree.
But let’s analyse you a bit. You want your stuff but you don’t want the clutter. In the end you have to understand what ‘letting go’ means or else you claim one thing and in actually fact play out the other. This does not help you or anyone around you.
5 TRUTHS ABOUT CLUTTER YOU SHOULD KNOW #3; YOU CAN GET YOUR CLUTTER OUT
If you do want to get rid of your clutter, you will. It’s still there because you want it that way. Once you tell yourself this and accept it each time you see your space, things will get better for you mind-wise even if it takes another while before the clutter actually get’s out. This is so because acceptance is the first step to making progress in life and yes it applies to clutter too!
5 TRUTHS ABOUT CLUTTER YOU SHOULD KNOW #4; KNOWING THAT CLUTTER IS BAD IS NOT ENOUGH
So you know that clutter is bad…does that get it out? No.
Permit me get all scientific with you now. Newton’s first law of motion states that objects tend to keep doing what they are doing. In other words, there is a natural tendency for objects to resist changes in their state of motion. This tendency is called Inertia. The resistance of an object to a change in its state of motion is Inertia.
Your clutter will not move until you move it.
5 TRUTHS ABOUT CLUTTER YOU SHOULD KNOW #5; NOBODY CAN GET YOUR CLUTTER OUT FOR YOU
Physically, someone can help you. But getting your clutter out is not just a physical thing. The decision to do it comes from a conviction within that what you’re doing is the best. The thing about a conviction is that even though it seems as if you’re being convinced to do something, you’re doing it because you want to do it and you believe that it’s what you must do.
This is why nobody can get your clutter out for you, they can help you but they cannot change you. To keep the clutter out, change is crucial , or else it starts to build up again. It’s the same as with people who need to loose some weight. It’s only a personal conviction that keeps their fingers of unhealthy foods.
